"The inauguration of Shams 1, a 100 MW solar thermal plant, is a major milestone in the development and deployment of renewable energy in the Middle East.
Masdar, along with its partners, today launched Shams 1, the largest concentrated solar power plant (CSP) in operation in the world. Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company, partnered with French energy company Total and Spain’s energy infrastructure company Abengoa. The 100 MW solar thermal project will power thousands of homes in the United Arab Emirates and displace approximately 175,000 tons of CO₂ per year. The 600 MUS$ project took three years to build.
..........
Located in the UAE’s Western Region, in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, Shams 1 was designed and developed by Shams Power Company, a joint venture between Masdar (60 percent), Total (20 percent) and Abengoa Solar (20 percent). With the addition of Shams 1, Masdar’s renewable energy portfolio accounts for almost 68 percent of the Gulf’s renewable energy capacity and nearly 10 percent of the world’s installed CSP capacity.
..........
Covering an area of 2.5 km², or 285 football fields, Shams 1 generates electricity to power 20,000 homes in the UAE. Also, because solar power is generated during peak demand, the UAE is able to reduce the need for “peak shaving” generators, which are expensive and idle most of the year.
..........
Incorporating the latest in parabolic trough technology, Shams 1 features more than 258,000 mirrors mounted on 768 tracking parabolic trough collectors. By concentrating heat from direct sunlight onto oil-filled pipes, Shams 1produces steam, which drives a turbine and generates electricity. In addition, the solar project uses a booster to heat steam as it enters the turbine to dramatically increase the cycle’s efficiency. The project also includes a dry-cooling system that significantly reduces water consumption – a critical advantage in the arid desert of western Abu Dhabi.
.......... "
"The Shams -1 concentrating solar power plant, with 100 megawatts of power output capacity, will be operational in 2012. Abengoa Solar and Total will own and operate the Shams-1 project in a joint venture with Masdar.

"The sun glinted brilliantly off an array of deep blue solar panels today as Qatar took its first step into a solar-powered future.
Before a gathering of foreign dignitaries, industry experts, and journalists, Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser pressed the ‘start’ button on a futuristic transparent touch screen, officially launching Qatar’s Solar Test Facility.
A joint venture of Chevron Energy Solutions, the Qatari firm GreenGulf, and the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), the facility is designed to test the performance of solar technologies under Qatar’s harsh climatic conditions.
While the many days of sunshine experienced in desert ecosystems can be a boon to solar power, the dust and heat in such areas are not. Dust alone can decrease the efficiency of photovoltaic panels by as much as 40 per cent.

" Valle 1 and Valle 2 will produce 320 GWh per year
Torresol Energy, a joint venture between Masdar - Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company and SENER - the Spanish engineering and construction firm, announced today at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi that the Valle 1 and Valle 2 plants - two identical 50 MW parabolic trough plants, located in Cadiz, in the South of Spain, have commenced commissioning on January 2012. The plants are equipped with thermal storage which will allow them to continue to produce power, even when there is no solar radiation, for up to 7.5 hours.
In October 2011, under the patronage of His Majesty the King of Spain Juan Carlos I and His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, Torresol Energy officially inaugurated Gemasolar in Fuentes de Andalucia, Spain.
The Gemasolar facility represented a significant breakthrough in the global solar industry and an important new field of cooperation between Spain and the UAE.
The announcement was made during a press conference held by the President of Torresol Energy, Enrique Sendagorta; the General Manager of Torresol Energy, Alvaro Lorente; the Director of Masdar Power, Frank Wouters; the Acting Chief Operating Officer of Masdar, Trevor Nash; and the President and CEO of SENER, Jorge Sendagorta.
Construction on Valle 1 and Valle 2 began in December 2009, and was completed in December 2011. In January 2012 the plants were connected to Spanish national grid for commercial operations. Roughly 4,500 workers worked over 2,700,000 hours to build and launch the twin projects during the two construction years.
Each of the plants will produce 160 GWh of power per year, equivalent to the amount of power consumed by 40,000 households.

" Valle 1 and Valle 2 are two adjacent solar plants that generate electricity by means of cylindrical-parabolic collectors.
Characteristics of Valle 1 and Valle 2:
Rated electrical power per plant: 50 MW
Net electrical production expected per plant: 160 GWh/year
Solar field: 510,000 m2 of SENERtroughR cylindrical-parabolic collectors
