" Inkjet system capable of printing over 2000 high performance solar cells per hour
Innovalight, Inc., a privately-held firm developing silicon-ink printed solar cell technology has installed the world’s first high-throughput industrial silicon-ink inkjet printing system at the company’s headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. The printing system was engineered and manufactured by OTB Solar in co-operation with Innovalight.
Using high precision touch-less inkjet printing of silicon-ink, Innovalight can halve the number of costly manufacturing steps required to produce high efficiency solar cells. In addition, the OTB printing system allows for high volume production of ultra-thin crystalline silicon solar cells with thicknesses as little as 50 microns. Current mass manufactured solar cells are almost four times thicker requiring more material and twice as many processing steps to convert into finished solar cells.

これまでソーラーカーのレースと知られていたオーストラリアのWorld Solar Challengeは、今年度からハイブリッドカーや電気自動車部門も加え大々的に拡大してエコカーのレースとして開催されることになりました。ワールド・ソーラーチャレンジの名は残されるようですが、総称としてGlobal Green Challengeとなったこのレースに、南アのソーラーカーレースで優勝した東海大学チームが、シャープから提供された最新の太陽電池を搭載して挑みます。
中東アラブ首長国連邦の首都アブダビで、脱石油を可能な限り実現しようという町作り、エコシティを作るマスダール・プロジェクトに利用される太陽光発電所の一部、といっても10MWがいよいよ発電を開始、系統連系を開始したということです。
作られた電力は、年末にオープンする再生可能エネルギーなどを研究するMasdar Institute of Science and Technologyで消費される電力をすべて賄う計画だということです。新しい町、それも世界初のカーボンニュートラルな町を作る計画がどんどん進んでいるという感じなのでしょうか? 現地は。世界的な景気の悪化で計画にも影響があったというような報道もあります。

THE NEW SHAPE OF SOLAR
Solyndra's panels employ cylindrical modules which capture sunlight across a 360-degree photovoltaic surface capable of converting direct, diffuse and reflected sunlight into electricity. This self-tracking design allows Solyndra's PV systems to capture significantly more sunlight than traditional flat-surfaced solar panels, which require costly tilted mounting devices to improve the capture of direct light, offer poor collection of diffuse light and fail to collect reflected light from rooftops or other installation surfaces.
Conventional flat PV panels must be mounted at an angle and spaced apart for optimum energy production. The sunlight striking the spaces between the panels is not collected and thus is wasted. Solyndra's panels perform optimally when mounted horizontally and packed closely together, thereby covering significantly more of the available roof area and producing more electricity per rooftop on an annual basis than a conventional panel installation.

データーシートのスペックによれば、1パネルの大きさは1.82 m x 1.08 mで、直径5cmほどのチューブが40本並んでいます。重さは、31kg。出力は、150Wpから200Wpまでの7種類。電圧は、65.7Vmpから78.3Vmp。このスペックから割り出してみた変換効率は、200Wpのパネルで10%少々です。かりに、直径5cmで長さ1.08mの円筒部分の面積は、40本とすると約6.3平方メートルにもなります。これだけ本来大きなCIGS太陽電池を2平方メートルのモジュールに集約することできると考えることができるかが、この太陽電池の評価が今後どのように判断されるかを分けることになりそうです。本体の価格は、調べがつきませんでしたが、最近政府からの資金調達に成功していますので、一定の評価は受けているようです。(t_t)

2008年の太陽光発電の各国の新設導入量がさまざまなところで報道されているが、数字がいろいろあってどれを根拠にしようとかと迷っていました。そこに上の報道、欧州太陽光発電産業協会(European Photovoltaic Industry Association EPIA)が各国のデーターを発表しということです。2008年度実績は、スペインが2,511MWで断トツ、2位が1,500MWでドイツ、そして日本はというと、アメリカ、韓国、イタリアにも抜かれ、230MWで6位ということでした。230MWといえば、23万kWpです。確かに意外に少ないですねぇ。なお、別の報道によれば日本の太陽光発電の総設備容量は、200MW(200万kWp)ということで、こちらは、ドイツ、スペインに次3位ということです。ランキングはその国の太陽光発電に対する考え方を反映した”国策”の結果です。また、これらのランキング上位の国においては、風力はもちろん、地熱、バイオマス、海洋エネルギーなどの利用の拡大を目指して”数字があがってきて”います。

"2008: AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR FOR THE PHOTOVOLTAIC MARKET
The European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) presented its annual market
figures to its members on Friday 20 March 2009. The global solar photovoltaic (PV)
market grew to at least 5.5 GW1 in 2008 compared to 2.4 GW in 2007. Spain ranks
first, followed by Germany.
At its 4th Market Potential and Production Capacity Workshop on Friday 20 March in Frankfurt,
EPIA presented its global market analysis and projections for the next 5 years.
In 2008, the global PV market reached 5.5 GW and the installed capacity totaled almost 15 GW
compared to 9 GW in 2007. Spain represented almost half of new installations in 2008 with about
2.5 GW new capacities, followed by Germany with 1.5 GW additional connected systems in the
last year. USA confirmed its trend with 342 MW newly installed capacities, followed by South
Korea which registered 274 MW of PV installations over the year. Italy connected almost 260 MW
while France, Portugal, Belgium and the Czech Republic made good scores confirming Europe’s
global leadership in the deployment of solar PV energy.
“A diversification of the market is taking place with countries adopting appropriate support policies,
this is very good news for the PV industry and the environment” said Dr. Winfried Hoffmann,
President of EPIA, in his concluding speech.
EPIA’s market and production forecasts for the next 5 years were also presented. Given the
current crisis context, high uncertainties over the 2009 market exist. This year, experts believe the
market could reach up to 7 GW, each individual country’s development influencing the final figure.
In particular Spain recently changed its support scheme, setting-up a cap which will limit the
development of the global market in 2009. The PV sector is hoping other markets such as the US,
Germany, France and Italy will pull the demand. Favourable policy frameworks are expected to
further accelerate PV deployment in these countries. In 2013, the global PV market could reach 22
GW if appropriate policies, such as feed-in tariffs, are in place. These figures will be presented in
detail at EPIA’s 3rd International Conference on Solar Photovoltaic Investments on 7-8 April 2009 in
Frankfurt, Germany

Electric SuperhighwayまたはGreenPower Superhighwayは、アメリカ大陸を高い電圧の送電線網で結ぶことで、送電コストとロスを小さくし、風力発電や太陽光発電で発電した電力を、遠くの州の人口密集地まで送電するという計画です。電圧が765KVということで、765-kilovolt (kV) 高圧送電網とよばれるシステムは、すでに建設が進められています。さらに、立地、建設計画が進められ、米東部を中心に部分的には具体化しそうです。それを全米に張り巡らせることができるか? アメリカの選択に注目です。

World leading research from CSIRO’s Future Manufacturing Flagship as part of the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium (VICOSC) aims to develop flexible, large area, cost-effective, reel-to-reel printable plastic solar cells.
Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources, Peter Batchelor, announced today the start of printing trials by Securency International, a banknote printing company.
“The production of these film-like solar cells will be literally as easy as printing money,” Mr Batchelor said.
“These solar cells are cutting edge technology and offer advantages over traditional solar technology because of the potential to mass produce the cells cheaply and install them over large areas such as rooftops.
“The technology used for these cells is still in its infancy, but this project aims to speed-up the development of this technology and take it from research to rooftops as quickly as possible.”

" MIT's Solar Electric Vehicle Team, the oldest such student team in the country, has just finished construction of its latest high-tech car and will be unveiling it to the public this Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. in Lobby 13.
The new car, called "Eleanor," is taller than earlier versions and thus allows a much more comfortable upright seating position for the driver, who was in an almost supine position in earlier models. But despite the 30 percent greater frontal area of the vehicle, the new car has exactly the same drag area -- a measure of its wind resistance -- as the team's older one, thanks to some very sophisticated aerodynamic design and wind-tunnel testing.
With six square meters of monocrystalline silicon solar cells and improved electronic systems and design, the car can run all day on a sunny day at a steady cruising speed of 55 mph. The car will be competing in October in the World Solar Challenge race across Australia, and in preparation for that the team plans to drive the car across the United States over the summer. About a dozen team members are expected to go to Australia for the race, although only four will drive the solar car in the competition.

The structure was built by Shangri-La Construction, and is occupied by Avjet Corporation.
The structure has been certified at a LEED Platinum level, and is the first aircraft hangar to be entirely powered by solar power.

" GridPoint, Inc., a leading clean tech company whose smart grid software platform benefits electric utilities, consumers and the environment, will demonstrate its “smart charging” capabilities at the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA) conference today in Washington, D.C.
At EDTA, GridPoint will demonstrate the ability to actively manage plug-in vehicle load. In real-time, GridPoint technology will simultaneously manage the power flow to a fleet of plug-in vehicle resources, including a Chevy Volt battery pack located at GM’s Battery Lab in Warren, Mich., and a pool of simulated electric vehicle resources.
“By embedding GridPoint’s software in electric vehicles, we enable utilities to offer reduced charging costs to customers and allow clean energy, such as wind and solar power, to be used as a source for recharging vehicles,” said Tony Posawatz, Volt Vehicle Line Director, General Motors. “Additionally, we help utilities eliminate the need to build new power plants that would otherwise be required to support the mass adoption of electric vehicles.”
