Solyndra's panels employ cylindrical modules which capture sunlight across a 360-degree photovoltaic surface capable of converting direct, diffuse and reflected sunlight into electricity. This self-tracking design allows Solyndra's PV systems to capture significantly more sunlight than traditional flat-surfaced solar panels, which require costly tilted mounting devices to improve the capture of direct light, offer poor collection of diffuse light and fail to collect reflected light from rooftops or other installation surfaces.
Conventional flat PV panels must be mounted at an angle and spaced apart for optimum energy production. The sunlight striking the spaces between the panels is not collected and thus is wasted. Solyndra's panels perform optimally when mounted horizontally and packed closely together, thereby covering significantly more of the available roof area and producing more electricity per rooftop on an annual basis than a conventional panel installation.

データーシートのスペックによれば、1パネルの大きさは1.82 m x 1.08 mで、直径5cmほどのチューブが40本並んでいます。重さは、31kg。出力は、150Wpから200Wpまでの7種類。電圧は、65.7Vmpから78.3Vmp。このスペックから割り出してみた変換効率は、200Wpのパネルで10%少々です。かりに、直径5cmで長さ1.08mの円筒部分の面積は、40本とすると約6.3平方メートルにもなります。これだけ本来大きなCIGS太陽電池を2平方メートルのモジュールに集約することできると考えることができるかが、この太陽電池の評価が今後どのように判断されるかを分けることになりそうです。本体の価格は、調べがつきませんでしたが、最近政府からの資金調達に成功していますので、一定の評価は受けているようです。(t_t)

The three turbines, installed in the Westre civic wind farm close to the German-Danish border, each have six megawatt rated power and a rotor diameter of 126 metres, making them some of the biggest wind turbines in the world. The new turbine was developed by REpower engineers for offshore deployment at a later stage and assembled at the company’s manufacturing centre in Bremerhaven. World leading research from CSIRO’s Future Manufacturing Flagship as part of the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium (VICOSC) aims to develop flexible, large area, cost-effective, reel-to-reel printable plastic solar cells.
Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources, Peter Batchelor, announced today the start of printing trials by Securency International, a banknote printing company.
“The production of these film-like solar cells will be literally as easy as printing money,” Mr Batchelor said.
“These solar cells are cutting edge technology and offer advantages over traditional solar technology because of the potential to mass produce the cells cheaply and install them over large areas such as rooftops.
“The technology used for these cells is still in its infancy, but this project aims to speed-up the development of this technology and take it from research to rooftops as quickly as possible.”

" On Friday, January 9, 2009, the City of Newark became the first electric
utility in the United States to approve the use of an electric vehicle to store and provide power for the
local electric grid.
The vehicle, which runs on electricity alone, is specifically designed to store energy and improve grid
reliability. University of Delaware researchers helped develop the concept, called Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G),
by working with a consortium of industry partners over the past decade to establish the
communications protocol between the vehicle and the grid operator. Industrial partners in the
consortium include Delmarva Power and its parent company Pepco Holdings Inc; PJM, the regional grid
operator; California-based electric vehicle manufacturer AC Propulsion; and others.
With the City of Newark’s approval, the UD team is now conducting V2G testing at two outlets within
the City’s service territory.
Associate Professor of Marine Policy Willett Kempton explained how the technology benefits the grid
operator. Currently, there is no energy storage built into the electric grid system, meaning that
electricity usage and electricity generation must be simultaneous. As fluctuating, non-dispatchable
renewable sources, such as solar and wind power, become a larger fraction of our electric generation,
energy storage will help grid operators smooth power output fluctuations.
“Wind tends to blow stronger at night when the electric load is low,” he said. “If electric vehicles
charged at night with wind power, the grid operator could use the energy in the batteries, when vehicles
aren’t needed for driving and are plugged in, to help maintain grid reliability. The vehicle owner would
then be paid for providing these energy services at a greater value than what they paid for the
electricity.”

MITの研究者が取り組むOWC(oscillating water column)は、波の圧力で棒が振動する力を利用して発電しようとするもので、潜在的には1kmの海岸線で100 から200MWもの発電量をもっているというもの。現状ではそれほど発電効率が良くはないが、改良は可能ということ。今後は、より大きな装置で実験し実用化を進めるということです。

" MIT researchers are working with Portuguese colleagues to design a pilot-scale device that will capture significantly more of the energy in ocean waves than existing systems, and use it to power an electricity-generating turbine.
Wave energy is a large, widespread renewable resource that is environmentally benign and readily scalable. In some locations -- the northwestern coasts of the United States, the western coast of Scotland, and the southern tips of South America, Africa and Australia, for example -- a wave-absorbing device could theoretically generate 100 to 200 megawatts of electricity per kilometer of coastline. But designing a wave-capture system that can deal with the harsh, corrosive seawater environment, handle hourly, daily and seasonal variations in wave intensity, and continue to operate safely in stormy weather is difficult.

The Portuguese plan is to integrate the OWC plant into the head of a new breakwater at the mouth of the Douro River in Porto, a large city in northern Portugal. Ultimately, the installation will include three OWCs that together will generate 750 kilowatts -- roughly enough to power 750 homes. As a bonus, the plant's absorption of wave energy at the breakwater head will calm the waters in the area and reduce local erosion.

IBMが発表してきた”今後5年間に生活を一変させる5つのイノベーション Next 5 in 5”に、2008年は「歩道や車道、側道、塗装、屋根、窓など」どこでも張るように使える太陽電池がリストに加わりました。その意味は、薄膜モノの太陽電池が、コスト、量産技術や寿命も含めた信頼性を実現するようになるということです。今回で三回目となる、同発表はIBMの企業としての戦略だけでなく、社会的なヴィジョンも反映しているということです。
住宅の屋根に太陽電池を取り付け、電力とともに、電気自動車も使って移動のためのエネルギーも自給してしまう、そんなプランがあちこちで作られるようになってきました。電気自動車が身近になるにつれ、この傾向はますます顕著になっていくに違いありません。

物流施設専門の不動産開発会社プロロジス(日本本社: 東京都港区東新橋)は、このたび神奈川県座間市に開発中のマルチテナント型(複数企業向け)物流施設「プロロジスパーク座間 I 」において、発電出力1メガワットの太陽光発電システムを導入することが決定したと発表しました。
「プロロジスパーク座間 I 」は現在2009年5月の竣工に向けて開発を進めていますが、同施設の屋根部分の約半分(約12,000平方メートル)の範囲に太陽光発電システムを設置するものです。2009年4月から6月末にかけて設置工事を行い、7月より同システムの稼動を開始し、同施設内で使用される電力の一部を賄う計画です。なお、今回の太陽光発電装置の導入にあたっては資源エネルギー庁の「新エネルギー等事業者支援対策事業」としての申請が認められ、同庁より補助金が交付されることになっています。
プロロジスでは全世界でサステイナブル(持続可能)な施設開発に積極的に取り組んでいます。その一環としてすでにヨーロッパ(フランス、スペイン、ドイツ)と北米において施設に大規模な太陽光発電システムを導入していますが、日本では「プロロジスパーク座間 I 」への導入が初となります。
今回、「プロロジスパーク座間 I 」に導入される太陽光発電システムは、年間で一般家庭約280世帯分の年間消費電力に相当する約100万kWhの発電を見込む大規模なものです。また、この発電システム導入により、原油換算で年間246キロリットルの石油代替効果が期待でき、CO2の削減量に換算すると年間約328トンとなります。これは、東京ドーム約20個分の面積の森林が吸収するCO2に相当します。

Silicon Genesis, a leader in process and technology for engineered substrates announced today that it has started production of the first ever kerf-free 150um solar-cell substrates at its new solar development and pilot production facility. Located in San Jose, California, the facility includes over 50,000 square feet of specially designed space to house the company’s PolyMax pilot and prototype high-volume manufacturing equipment.
SiGen’s pilot line started producing 150um thick, full size 125mm wafers and will soon be manufacturing 156mm wafers. The expanded pilot line will be used to produce substrate samples and further develop the PolyMax high-volume manufacturing equipment to efficiently convert silicon ingots into thin silicon wafers ranging from 150um to 50um in thickness. The move to a larger facility will enable the company to better ramp up production of innovative PolyMax thin-PV substrates. The new facility represents SiGen’s continuous efforts
to bring the pilot line to sample production by spring 2009.
The production of 150um thick wafers will allow immediate adoption by PV cell manufacturers using existing processes and automation. The kerf-free nature of the PolyMax system will allow a first-order cost savings in cell manufacturing and halve the silicon feedstock material required to manufacture the same amount of MW capacity per year.

太陽電池の高い変換効率を追求する研究がアメリカで研究されているようです。研究の音頭をおっているのは、米大統領直轄の軍事関連の先端研究で知られるDARPAで、プロジェクト名は、
VHESC : Very High Efficiency Solar Cells program
ということです。伝えられる情報では集光型で色ごとのことなる分光特性を生かした太陽光発電素子の可能性を追求しているようです。この方式で計算上は、すでに50%以上の発電効率た可能ということのようです。軍事研究で、あまり商用化の見込みを考えていない分野でのこうした研究が、一般の太陽電池になんらかのいい影響を考えるともおもえませんが、実験室レベルでは、50%をこえつつあるのかもしれないということでクリッピングしておきます。

このプログラムの2007年の研究ではUniversity of Delawareの研究が、変換効率40.8%を結晶系の太陽電池で特殊な光の条件環境での値ながら成功させています。軍事利用が目的で、多くの予算が投じられる研究とはいえ、太陽光発電素子の変換効率は、40%台を越え、50%も伺う段階にまで達しつつあるようです。(t_t)

10月4日まで開催されていたCEATEC JAPAN 2008に登場したTDKの直流電化エコホームの話題がずっと気になっていました。その時期に行った同業者の自然エネルギー屋さんとのミーティングにも話題として登場しましたし、シックハウス対策などの健康を考えた住宅を手がける設計士さんからも、「電磁波に過敏な人からの問い合わせが、化学物質過敏症の問い合わせが増えるに従い、同じように増えています。交流でなく、直流で暮らせないかという問い合わせもあるのですが、、、。どう思います?」 なんて、お聞きいただいたのですが、、、、電磁波に過敏で、日常生活に支障がでるという人々の存在も、詳しい情報ははじめてお聞きしましたし、たびたび話題にのぼる、TDKの直流電化住宅についても、ヘッドラインをみた程度の知識しかなかったので、不明を恥じながらも2週間がたってしまいました。先のCEATEC JAPAN 2008にもいかなかったので、なんとか情報を集めようと考えていたところ、YouTubeに動画が掲載されていました。動画は現場の雰囲気をやはりよく伝えてくれます。なんとなくですが、より全体像が見えてきました。

*その1 ランク1に選ばれた、薄膜モノの太陽電池を手がけるドイツのOdersun社。同社のサイトには、 Copper-Indium-disulphide semiconductor on long reels of Copper Tape (CISCuT)の太陽電池と記載されています。30MWの工場をドイツで今年の春に運転を開始しているようです。
